2nd child on the way, how will your first react?

It's almost time: you're expecting your second child. This is a special time, and you'll be focusing on it. But how will your first child react to this situation? And how can you best prepare? Read along!

While it's wonderful, it's also incredibly exciting for your first child. A lot will change, of course. You suddenly have to divide your attention, while they used to get all the attention. Because of this, your first child may sometimes react jealously or angrily to your newborn. It's also possible that your first child really enjoys it and is incredibly protective, only wanting cuddles and kisses. Of course, this isn't the same for everyone. Dividing the attention for a mother or father is very difficult, especially in the beginning. You're still finding your feet together. This is perfectly fine.

In the beginning, you can let your first child help out a lot. They often really enjoy this and will get lots of attention from you. For example, ask them to grab something or have them sit next to you and hold the bottle. Even when the baby is sleeping, you can give your first child some extra attention. Divide the tasks with your partner. It's not unusual if you play with your little one one time and clean up the next.

Your first child may struggle at first with suddenly having a little brother or sister. This can bring sadness and anger. Don't get angry about it. It's not easy for your first child either. Let them vent and try to explain the situation as clearly and simply as possible. Also, try a new routine. Did you always put your first child to bed alone and let them toss and turn? Try reading a book to them and stay in bed a little longer.
